Termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syria Announced
WASHINGTON – Today, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem announced the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Syria, following a thorough review of current country conditions.
“This step represents a necessary restoration of order to America’s immigration system,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Circumstances in Syria no longer justify preventing its nationals from returning. For nearly twenty years, the region has faced instability and extremism, and continuing TPS for Syrians is inconsistent with U.S. national interests. TPS is, by design, a temporary measure.”
Syrian nationals currently under TPS will be granted 60 days to depart the United States voluntarily. Those leaving are encouraged to use the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home app to confirm their departure. This program provides a safe and secure process for self-removal, including a complimentary flight, a $1,000 departure incentive, and possible eligibility for legal immigration opportunities in the future.
After the 60-day period, any Syrian national with TPS status who has not initiated voluntary departure will be subject to arrest and removal. Individuals who require forced removal by DHS will be permanently barred from reentering the United States.
